Are you nervous about your upcoming dentist appointment? For many people, their anxiety stems from fear of the unknown. Since dentists use sharp and unfamiliar tools in your mouth, it’s completely understandable why some patients dread going in for a checkup and cleaning. By learning about the different types of tools your dentist uses, it can significantly ease your nerves. That said, here are a few dental instruments often used during routine appointments.

Explorers and Probes

Everyone needs to visit their dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning. These routine appointments allow them to monitor your oral health, ensuring there are no concerning problems developing. At every visit, your dentist will conduct an oral examination using explorers and probes.

A dental explorer looks like a small pen with a thin hook on one or both ends. It’s designed to catch plaque and cavities while also checking the condition of restorations. This tool works in tandem with a periodontal probe, which has small rings marked in millimeter increments to check your gum health.

Dental Mirror

A dental mirror is probably the most recognizable dental instrument. It has a small circular mirror on one end that comfortably fits inside your mouth. The tool allows your dentist to thoroughly check every small area in your oral cavity. This mirror is especially helpful during exams, fillings, and cleanings!

Scaler

While scalers look identical to dental explorers, they serve an entirely different purpose. The hook on the end of a scaler is much thicker, allowing it to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. In addition, it can be used to help eliminate calculus buildup that can lead to oral health issues like cavities, decay, and gum disease.

Suction

A suction device is an incredibly helpful tool! It keeps your mouth clean while your dentist performs any necessary treatments. For instance, it can remove saliva, water, tartar, and debris from your mouth as needed. Using this instrument allows your dental team to work more effectively and prevents you from accidentally swallowing something.

Dental Polisher

Your dentist may use a dental polisher during a professional cleaning. It’s a small stainless-steel wand that spins like an electric toothbrush. The tool is often used alongside a prophy cup that’s filled with polishing paste. Working in tandem, these instruments help your dentist effectively remove plaque and clean the surface of each tooth.

Learning about these common dental instruments will help significantly ease your anxiety about your upcoming appointment. After reading this guide, you can feel ready to conquer your next checkup!
