A Brief History of Cosmetic Dentistry
Modern cosmetic dentistry is remarkably powerful, capable of fixing a wide variety of aesthetic issues easily, painlessly, and within just a few dental appointments.
However, it’s taken a lot of time for cosmetic dentistry to get that good. In fact, while many modern cosmetic techniques came about in the 20th century, making smiles brighter has a history much longer than that. If you’re curious, here’s a brief history of cosmetic dentistry.
Ancient Techniques
Archeologists have found evidence as far back as 700 B.C. of people trying to replace teeth that have been lost with a wide variety of materials. The Etruscans, for example, made dentures using ivory, bone, and animal teeth.
However, as far as cosmetic dentistry goes, there were only a few instances in the ancient world. The most notable were the Romans who, according to historians, would use their own urine to whiten their teeth. According to some, the ammonia in the urine would be able to break down stains on the teeth, though naturally very few would want to test that theory.
Dark Ages, White Teeth
In the Medieval era, dentistry was often done by barbers as a part of their practice. While that may not sound very reassuring, there were some interesting advances made during this period. Medieval barbers would sometimes file down parts of patients’ teeth and apply a coat to them that would make them whiter.
However, this procedure would also destroy the tooth’s enamel and, eventually, the tooth itself. Beauty is pain, after all.
The Art of the Enlightenment
In the 1700s, dentistry improved significantly with the new use of porcelain in dentures. This ceramic was strong, durable, and most of all, resembled incredibly beautiful teeth. While the implants and prosthetics themselves were still pretty crude, the use of this material made them exceedingly popular.
The Modern Day
In the 20th century, dentistry made leaps and bounds in what it was able to offer to its patients. Plastics and acrylics joined porcelain and metal as the most popular materials used in prosthetics. The advent of film also spurred the invention of veneers, which were created to help movie stars look their best.
Teeth whitening and dental bonding were also perfected during the mid-to-late 20th century, as was orthodontics. After decades, centuries, and even millennia of research, cosmetic dentists have all the tools necessary to give you the shining smile you deserve!
