Healthy Habits: 4 Snacks that Safeguard Your Smile
You probably already know that brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily is an important part of any preventative at-home dental hygiene routine. It’s a simple and effective way to remove any leftover bits of food you’ve eaten to keep unwanted bacteria from flourishing. Did you know, though, that you can also avoid cavities and gum disease by eating certain dental-friendly foods? Keep reading to learn about 4 things you can add to your diet to keep your smile happy and healthy!
Food #1: Dairy Products
Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt can strengthen your pearly whites because they contain calcium. This nutrient restores your enamel, which is the protective outer layer of your teeth. On top of that, calcium contained in your saliva can also mend acid damage which also contributes to tooth decay. Essentially, the stronger your teeth, the better they can resist damage from cavity-inducing bacteria.
For those who are sensitive to dairy or are lactose intolerant, you can find several calcium-fortified nut milks like almond or soy.
Food #2: Leafy Greens
If you don’t already include them, incorporating certain vegetables in your menu can support your oral health without adding a lot of extra calories. Leafy options like spinach, kale, or collard greens are packed with vitamins and minerals like calcium and folic acid. Calcium aides your teeth while folic acid helps your mouth fight infection so you’re less likely to develop gum disease. As a bonus, these crunchy veggies scrub your teeth while you eat which can help reduce plaque buildup.
Food #3: Nuts
Nuts are packed with important minerals to support your pearly whites, like calcium and phosphorus. These minerals work together to rebuild your enamel and strengthen your teeth and bones. Almonds are a great option because they’re particularly low in sugar. Not only that, but chewing hard nuts produces additional saliva which is a natural disinfectant for your mouth. It neutralizes acid content and helps rinse away any particles that have been left behind after meals.
Food #4: Fruits
Oranges, strawberries, and kiwis are all examples of fruits that contain high levels of vitamin C which is good for your gums. It keeps your connective tissues strong and healthy so that your teeth have a firm foundation. It also defends your gums against cell damage and bacterial infection, meaning it prevents and combats periodontal disease.
By switching out sugary snacks for these more wholesome alternatives, you’ll have a naturally protected smile!
